Will communities take over from unions but with greater power?

Workers revolt

As communities get bigger what collective power will they have?  Unions have traditionally been a way for the people to have a collective voice but do they always get the deal they feel is right?  Or do their leaders sell them down the river?  Big debate I know but what if communities get so big they become the voice of the people?

Social media is your greatest (people) asset

People greatest asset
A phrase that although well worn, still used in so many places and still something HR (at least) claim to be of vital importance based on our own recent research i.e. employee engagement and talent management being rated by over 90% of participants as vital to their corporate success.

So how does social media fit in?  (It's a long answer!)

Corporate social media assessment

Free speech

We recently launched a corporate social media assessment to look at how HR feel about the use of social media as part of their people strategy but also how comfortable they feel as individuals in using the same tools.  We had a fantastic response (much greater than expected) but you can still complete the assessment and qualify for a free copy of the report (due April 09). In the meantime here are some of the highlights:

  • 94% of respondents want to stay abreast of how social media can be used as part of their people strategy.
  • 12% are comfortable with social media and see how it can be used to achieve their strategic HR goals i.e. not that many!

Looks like the report will make interesting reading.

The Origin of Talent Managment

Darwin Will organisations (HR) apply Darwin's theory that

"It's not the strongest or most intelligent that survive; it’s those that are willing and able to adapt and change."

When reviewing their people, and in some cases letting some go, who are they choosing and why? But more importantly, are HR themselves adapting to the new economic climate.

Are HR going to start maximising social media tools to become more efficient?

I hope so!

Social Tentacles

Social tentacles How many social networks, profiles, friends do we need?

Although those of us who 'get excited' by social media go off and try pretty much any new idea, the norm's of this world struggle with Facebook let alone Twitter.

So yet again, less is more but where should you start?

Social HR

So we are off to a flying start to 2009 with the press hovering like vultures around the retail sector.  Half the time it is the media that cause all the problems which ends up with employees then spending more time worrying than working.  So what should or could HR be doing to calm their people?

Hire small giants in 2009

Seth Godin gets to the point in his post Hubris vs. Humility

Great companies hire great people (Google, Microsoft, GE, Dell etc) but as Godin comments how many can survive away from the big marketing mother ship?  Can an Oracle or SAP software sales person hack it in the real world?  Can a P&G or Apple marketing guru make it happen on a smaller scale?  Can a Boots or M&S store manager turn the pennies for a less well known retailer?

Of course some can and will but how many?  I've hired (and fired) a few of this ilk and still see them in place at many companies; living off the fat of the land playing the big 'I am'.  We may soon see a few of these faces on Linkedin 'looking to discuss opportunities'.  As Godin states:

"Confidence is often a self-fulfilling prophecy, particularly in marketing or investing. Arrogance, on the other hand, is hard to reward."

From ‘good to great’ – how internal social networking can transform your business

Book_good_to_great In Jim Collins book ‘Good to great’ one of the key differences between a good and great company was the people; having the right people on the bus and then involving the people in helping to solve the challenges the organisation faced.

Given the current level of consumer confidence never has it been more critical for organisations to apply their collective brain power to maximise their customer proposition.  But with so many external influences on your organisation, perpetuated by the Internet, how do you fight back?
