Best UK Recruitment Blog 2009 - New £1m Blogging Contract

And+the+winner+isSo after much debate over who would win Best UK Recruitment Blog 2009 I have managed to retain my crown for the third year running!

A big thank you to the people who voted for me.  Although some were hoping to see the win going to the South Coast it was not to be - yet!

Of course I am delighted to win again but I am also concerned at the lack of decent recruitment blogs we have in the UK; so what can we or should we be hoping for in 2010?

Now I'm not 100% sure on this but I may have been the first UK Recruitment blogger but if not the first, one of the first.  Since I started blogging back in June 2006 quite a few have come and gone.  Even the mighty Cheezhead has "sold out" presumably because he couldn't make full time blogging pay the bills.  But what is more worrying, is that the third place Blog this year was Picture More.  Now I have nothing against them or their Blog, but they have only posted seven (7) times since 21 August this year.  Now I appreciate that it is not purely related to volume but Second place Sirona posts that many pretty much every week!  Interestingly, a newbie to blogging recently commented that having a blog is a bigger undertaking than they expected (or words to that effect) which indeed it is.

So what are we to do?  If the big Cheez cannot keep it up any longer, and our third best Blogger probably posts less often than Sirona gets let out to play (I was going to be rude but thought better of it), where does that leave the UK as the forward thinking leading edge recruitment nation that we are?  Maybe Bill Boorman really does believe that the US is ahead of us in the sourcing field and that America is the land of "milk and money" but I reckon we still have plenty to shout about and are way ahead of the Yanks in many ways in the recruitment sector.  Their recruitment bloggers and social recruiting guru's are a bunch of sycophants (apart from the scary Animal [sic]!) and just agree with each other - how does that help their readers?

2010 is the year of recruitment but employers will be looking to minimise their costs and reduce their reliance on job boards and agencies.  They won't get rid of all but need help in defining which channels/service providers actually add value and this is where I see the role of the Recruitment Blog.

To educate, advise and help recruiters to do a better job.

But as good as I am (or not) I can't do it alone.  Cheezhead couldn't even though he tried.  So what to do?  My Blog is going to change big time for 2010 and for the first time I will accept Guest Posts so if you want to be part of the Best UK Recruitment Blog leave a comment or e-mail me petergold [at] hirestrategies [dot] co [dot] uk and I'll let you know how to progress.

I'll be writing a bit more about Guest Bloggers as this is just the start and I don't want to rant when I should be celebrating :)

So in closing, I didn't get an X-Factor £1m contract but I do believe I have a few bottles of bubbly on the way courtesy of the awards sponsor Harbour - the latest, greatest ATS vendor.
