Social Tentacles

Social tentacles How many social networks, profiles, friends do we need?

Although those of us who 'get excited' by social media go off and try pretty much any new idea, the norm's of this world struggle with Facebook let alone Twitter.

So yet again, less is more but where should you start?

The job boards act like a jelly fish, hanging their tentacles (and other things!) out there looking to paralyse the job seeker and suck them into their site.  They may not be a great catch put push your tentacles out far enough, in as many places as possible, and you should get enough sustenance to survive.  But this is not how an employer should be working.

The key element I often see missing is a STRATEGY.  So what if you have a Facebook profile; if you don't have a recruitment strategy and in turn an online strategy that supports the main strategy how does a Facebook profile fit?  It may but then again it may not.  And of course no point having a presence on (for example) Twitter if you don't bother updating it

Bottom line: Don't just get your tentacles out for the sake of it - unless you have a strategy!

(I know tentacles can be mis-pronounced; maybe it's just another analogy)
