Internet advertising is, like all fads, overrated

According to Dan Sabbagh Media Editor of the Times, Google is crap and Internet advertising is a fad.  He has an interesting inclusion on Wikipedia which shows off the accuracy of his journalistic talents!

Normally I ignore what journalists tell us as they are either all hype, doom and gloom or swing violently between both camps in the same article.  But, for someone who is supposed to provide decent reporting, how can someone who clearly has little idea or evidence (although when did journo's care about that) about how Google Adwords even works?

Dan Sabbagh starts his article off with targeted TV advertising and then moves swiftly on to why "Internet advertising, like all fads, is totally overrated."

To quote Danny in more detail:

"Google is not transparent how the auction process works.  The highest bidder does not necessarily win because Google applies a quality factor to advertisers, so it cannot be easily proved whether smaller players trying to break into a market are paying fair prices."

And he goes on:

"Once advertisers wake up to the notion that Google is overrated and that television advertising, allied to a new-fangled targeting is underrated, then, well, ITV might be able to afford to buy another round of FA cup rights." (nice grammar huh!)

Normally I would go into why this idiot is talking from somewhere dark and dangerous but if the best close he can offer to his article is "England's humiliating exit in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers" I think I'll offer a close using the exact extract from Wikipedia (which may or may not be accurate but I'm just copying it).

"In April 2005, along with his editor Robert Thomson, he was served with a criminal libel summons from a French court by the Barclay Brothers over an article published in The Times in November 2004. That action was dropped after The Times published a statement in February 2007. He was also elected as a Labour councillor in the London Borough of Lambeth between August 1999 and May 2006."

I hope Google respond accordingly and he ends up with his mate Gordon.
