What if Facebook was switched off?

A recent quote stated that if Facebook were a country, based on the number of members, it would be the 11th largest country in the World.  But what would happen if it was switched off overnight?

How would the Facebookians survive?  Or would they become extinct?

Of course everyone will cry 'it would never happen, ever'.  But what if it did?  The point is that those that use Facebook daily would clearly miss it.  But how long would they wait for it; a day, a week, a month?  Would they move over to Bebo or Myspace or would they lose faith in social networks after having put in so much effort to building their profile.

Of course the same applies to losing Gmail, Google search or even Twitter as well as many other applications/services.  But e-mail (for example) would be replaced albeit with some pain but I wonder how people would feel about their profile disappearing overnight.  There would probably be a longer period of mourning over the loss of Facebook than an e-mail service as we often have back-up e-mail services.  But your profile builds over time and kind of becomes a bit like an old photo album showing aspects of your life over time.  Will people (assuming it never dies) keep their profile for say 10-20 years?  Where (which platform/service) will it end up?  Will some kind of profile back-up service be launched so we can NEVER lose our profiles and easily move across platforms?

Social networks are here to stay and will of course change over the years but as we become more and more 'involved' with them survival becomes ever more critical for both business and social purposes.

But, what today can we do to safeguard our profiles?  Or does nobody actually care?
