Talent Management Masterclass

I attended a seminar/workshop yesterday which was around Unified Talent Management.  Overall very good but I did think about a post from Seth Godin the other day: The new standard for meetings and conferences; particularly as Virgin Trains charge £220 for a peak return to London.  On top of the cost of driving to the train station and paying for my car park.  Good investment in the end but the Godin post does make you think!

One of the topics we raised was the use of Social Media within large organisations; an interesting post on this very subject on Online Marketing Blog: Adopting Social Media in the Enterprise.

Clearly from our discussions, organisations are at very different stages in their TM strategy but in any case, if HR can get the Board to recognise that without the right people the organisation will NOT succeed, then HR will have a seat not just at the top table, but right next to the CEO!!

A few notes I made from (the speakers) yesterday:

  1. Talent Management is a two-way affair; we 'do it' to each other.
  2. The UK will have a labour shortage of 714,000 people by 2010.
  3. 30% of Gen Y are dis-engaged, compared to only 22% Gen X and 18% Baby Boomers.
  4. Lack of a unified talent solution is the biggest barrier to successful TM.

A few thoughts from yesterday:

  • TM is not a process; it's an everyday activity.
  • People need guidance and attention; not process and procedures.
  • TM is today's business focus.
  • Tomorrow the people will tell the business to focus on them so they (the people) deliver what the business needs.
  • TM is not about the technology; unless it doesn't work.
  • If the Board don't get it (TM); HR won't get it (the budget).

We've started a discussion on the Talent Management Network; feel free to join in.
