Which e-mail address?

I remember going to a seminar about 5 years ago when one of the speakers talked about e-mail addresses.  Almost everyone had an e-mail address, very few had 2 e-mail address and no-one had 3+ e-mail addresses.

Gasp, shock, horror; he knew kids with 5+ addresses.

OK, so the World has moved on a lot since then but in the same way we tend to have a home number and work number, a home address and work address, a personal e-mail and work e-mail, the next thing will be the personal social network and the business social network.

There are a number of reasons for this:

  1. People put silly things on the Facebook/MySpace profiles.
  2. A lot of what is on the above two doesn't mix with work.
  3. By volunteering a 'business' profile it divert employers away from their 'personal' wild child, porn star profile.

I could of course think of many more but think the above make the point.  Assuming this all to be correct, how do recruiters tap into this?  Obviously the likes of Linkedin are already good hunting grounds for recruiters but what about the applicant?

  • How do they get the information they want about an employer?
  • How does the new hire get to ask silly new hire questions of other new hires if they do not know who they are?
  • How does the recruiter get to spot a great applicant and strike up conversation before they want to hire them?

The opportunities for social recruiting are endless; then again so no doubt are the hours that will pass before employers get to see the light!!
