Pete's eats suffer staff crisis
I visited the sunny Welsh town of Llanberis last weekend for a bit of a lads weekend in the hills. Having seen one of the older members of our clan narrowly avoid death when one of our younger members decided to start a mini avalanche; and our inexperienced members suffer the legendary Crib Goch, we eventually retired to the safety of Pete's Eats for a well earned cuppa.
But alas, due to a local staff crisis Pete's was shut until further notice!
So, should Pete have hired anyone as long as they could take your money and grunt in your direction (as per KFC) or, should he have took the 'closed until further notice' option?
Retailers always seem to have the HR objectives of:
- Better quality staff.
- Better staff retention.
But what if there are no decent people? What if those people that are in the area don't stay very long? What if you don't really want to retain your staff very long because they are all crap, and you hate them and you just want them to go back to being a traffic warden or working at KFC? Poor old Pete didn't know what to do and stayed in bed or jumped off Crib Goch rather than face such a dilemma.
But poor old Pete couldn't really take the view that 'crap local people only have to serve crap local customers' because Llanberis get lots of non-local climbers with a few quid to spend; not many quids of course because most real climbers are employed by the government, but some do have cash to spend and want a cuppa and some cake at the end of the day.
So, I think that next time I go into a retailer such as PC World, with not very good staff, but get what I want, I will think myself fortunate that some retailers have to maybe take what they can get and I should think myself lucky that they do; otherwise they may go the same way as Pete and jump off the proverbial mountain! And I'd then have to go without my prize or drive even further to get whatever it is that I need!
