The Engineer

I had a service engineer turn up at the house the other week to fix one of the white metal boxes in the small room next to the kitchen.  It has been nice and quiet without the constant whirring of said machine but having no idea how to turn it off had come to accept the noise as part of a growing family.

Anyway, I remember having discussions with employers who thought that the Internet was just for geeks and then slowly we started to see 'white collar' jobs online.  And now it is pretty much jobs for anyone online; even service engineers.

The engineer in question had more technology in his briefcase than me. Laptop, wireless connection, seamless link into the call centre system with access to my details; he even had a little printer to give me a call sheet showing what he had done to the white thing.  But, not happy with being a cyber repair dude he even managed to flog me some limescale tablets, take payment by card (I tried the 'sorry mate, no cash on me' routine) and again, print me off the receipt before going to his van and delivering the goods in real time!

So, not only is technology in play for pretty much any job, I also now know what the white thing is in the small room next to the kitchen.  We learn something new every day.
