Mobile recruitment advertising
Everyone will have heard about how Google are entering the mobile phone market but any real affect could be a long way away; particularly as the US market is about 5 years behind the European mobile market (oh yes they are).
So, instead of waiting for Google et al to work out what can be done on your phone as far as recruiting is concerned maybe we could utilise what we already have.
Dave Martin at the online fruit shop (www.allthetopbananas.com) has recently raised this on his fruit blog and I promised to respond hence this post.

Text/SMS is huge in the UK yet very few organisations use it for recruiting and those that do, hardly scratch the surface. For example, i-GRasp have SMS functionality within their ATS and I have actually received an SMS job alert from Orange who use this functionality. But it was a simple one-way message.
Furthermore, we had this shown to us as a standard demo by i-GRasp so I asked if this was standard i-GRasp functionality and of course was told yes.
"Send me a message then please" I requested.
"No problem" they said.
After 3 months chasing I gave up waiting!!
But, the point is that one-way is not where the value lies.
Imagine you walk down the high street and Mothercare has a poster in store shouting:
Mothercare Sales Advisors needed. Text JOB to 445566.
This could then kick off a two-way process whereby:
- You have the mobile number of someone who is interested.
- You can respond asking for more details albeit 'keep it simple'.
- The applicant details can be automatically added to the ATS and away you go.
Dave Martin also talks about screen sizes of phones. Write the site correctly and it will be fine. We added some additional code to www.mothercarejobs.com which took a matter of minutes and it automatically resizes for mobile browsers/screen sizes making it easy to use and see on your phone.
There is so much more that can be done as well, even allowing applicants to run a small application on their phone that gives them even more functionality and all of this already exists regardless of what Google do.
So, no need to wait for Android, there is plenty that can already be done.
