Google need funky career development
According to Liane Hornsey, Google HR Director from EMEA:
"The box I would like to tick for 2008 is doing something really funky and different with career development". (Personnel Today 20/11/07)
So what might she have up her sleeve? What does funky career development look like?
I reckon they get to take 20% of their 20% allowance to do any kind of work and save that up to do any kind of career development. I think for a company such as Google to come up with anything more complex than 'we give you time and money, you choose what you do' would be against their culture.
So, over a 48 working week year I calculate I would have 12 days to any kind of career development work I choose - not bad really. But, what does that then include? What if by learning to sky dive I think I would be more motivated at work and therefore more open to new ideas (as I am now more motivated) and therefore developing my skills in new areas? Would it be allowed?
But what would you do with 12 days extra per year???
