The Appointment - will it survive?
Having eagerly awaited my bumper copy of The Appointment magazine I was rewarded on the first day of yet another glorious week. And what a riveting read it was. Full of old news and 31 whole pages of jobs - surely there would be something for me to comment on!
Of course there was - hope your still reading Adam.
UPDATE: The owners of said magazine do not agree with my comments; you can read their defense and lovely legal letter here.
Being a bumper issue there were of course going to be masses of retailers wanting to attract those passive job seekers that only The Appointment can reach - unlike the Internet of course. Although a passive job seeker is a bit like a meat eating vegetarian isn't it Adam??
Anyway, what did I find on this glorious day amongst these 31 pages?
- 10 whole pages provided by RHR, Inretail and Retail Careers.
- 9 pages advertising who will be attending their Careers Forum.
- 4 pages from recruitment agencies.
- And last bit not least, 8 pages from real clients and what big names some of them where - Wilko, Tie Rack, Past Times, TM Lewin, Christy Towels - they did however have TK Maxx and Topshop so not entirely doom and gloom.
So, 61% of the job section was paid for 'internally' (and yes, I do include RHR as internal but taking RHR out still leaves it at 55% as 'internal') or from the careers forum pot i.e. adverts for the forum rather than showing jobs.
Without wanting to get my maths wrong I reckon that 12 pages of advertising:
- Won't be enough to survive and,
- Displays pretty much a lack of interest from their target market.
But what do I know..... I can't even spell or quote a rate card accurately!
