Sausage and mash
I remember quite vividly a conversation I had with a Dutch traveller when I was in Manaus, Brazil, deep in the Amazon jungle. When you are stuck on a very small boat, for 3 days, with little to eat other than what the crew catch, food becomes pretty important. Basically, the (young) Dutch traveller was criticising the boring English fayre, claiming that cabbage, potatoes and sausage were our staple diet and the Dutch had much more exciting food than the UK, even though their landscape/climate was very similar so left the indigenous people with few alternative from the British.
Basically, sausages were full of poor quality meat and offal, potatoes were boring and had little taste and gravy (often added to make it all slightly more palatable) was pointless as it had little if any taste.
Yet now, we have award winning sausages, premium and organic potatoes grown specifically for their baking/frying/mashing characteristics and gravy of all types and tastes with garlic and spices, top quality red wine/brandy/whiskey added to entertain the taste buds. Furthermore, top restaurants and chefs have this traditional dish on their menu's as do gastropubs and tourist restaurants across the UK. Clearly not as boring as it may once have been!
The CV database was not much different not so many years ago. Recruiters didn't see much value in them, they were full of crap, another task to undertake with limited value and almost pointless as a recruiting tool.
Yet now, with more intelligent search technology such as Burning Glass, Daxtra etc integrated search from ATS to Monster, Jobster etc all of a sudden the boring CV database is back in favour. It is not just basic food, but top quality fayre that the conceptual search get to the quality more easily and accurately. The ATS vendors are now adding this sexy new concept into their offering to make even greater use of their platform rather than having to (literally) go login elsewhere to get some more and maybe better quality. If you don't have it here, let us go get it for you; and we'll even serve it direct to your desktop and import the best directly into your database.
And the Dutch food that is not as boring as ours? Pizza, curry, noodles, burritos......... well, I suppose if you've always had that choice I suppose you think that's always been the norm.
In the same way the lucky recruiters that get conceptual search from day one, won't be any different from the 10 year olds who always had Google when they started to use a computer at school.
Funny how things change.
