Google domains
Google have now launched Google Aps which is basically web page, webmail, calendar and contacts, all shared across your (small) company and even using your own domain name in your e-mail address as you BYOD (bring your own domain) to the party.
A great idea for small groups who work in virtual offices across the country/globe. But imagine the extra knowledge this begins to give Google. They know when you are looking to buy a new laptop, find a new job, move house etc. OK, so they already know some of this hence they now offer personalised search, but I reckon the majority of people send the majority of their e-mail whilst at work rather than at home. This being the case, the value to Google of getting access to this volume of e-mail, contacts and calendar entries is pretty significant.
They know where you are going so can recommend hotels and restaurants, travel options, train tickets, travel agents and the list goes on.
But, it does rely on people buying their domain names and then having to do a little bit of work to make it all flow smoothly. Wouldn't it be so much easier just to buy your domain name from Google and have them provide all the Apps as well. Hell, they could even provide the domain name free of charge!!
Imagine a small recruitment business. They receive their orders by e-mail and as they use G-mail, Google can automatically find CV's, Blogs etc that match the job order. PPC would of course be at work here as usual but who would mind if it worked. Maybe Google could notify potential applicants of jobs that had been e-mailed to other G-mail users and point both recruiter and applicant towards each other but without full disclosure.
Search is important but Google can already see they need more data than just search activities in order to make life easier for all; particularly as we now have vertical search engines popping up all over the place as Google becomes ever more difficult to find the right answers amongst all the spam sites.
